APA Scholar Testimonial
by Aisha Abdullahi
"Attending the APA conference for the first time was a transformative experience! My wonderful mentor, Dr. Idia Thurston, made it even more special. She welcomed me with a warm hug, and I instantly felt I had made the right choice in my mentorship. Dr. Thurston provided invaluable advice based on her own graduate school experiences, and our discussions about navigating the research field as a woman of color, while staying true to our beliefs and passions, filled me with joy.
She introduced me to her colleagues from across the country, who are engaged in innovative and passion-driven research. Connecting with some of the most prestigious pediatric clinical psychologists and gaining their insights was priceless.
The APA also offers a diverse range of research fields, making it easy to find a community that aligns with your interests. I was able to attend sessions in my respective division, such as, "Moving Forward: Liberation Psychology in Pediatric Psychology Supervision, Practice, and Research" as well as sessions from Division 52, like "Psychology Coalition at the United Nations: Opportunities to Collaborate".
I'm grateful to the Society of Pediatric Psychology Board for this award and for making my time at the APA conference both rewarding and worthwhile. I look forward to seeing how this experience will impact my professional career!"
