Nephrology

Mission and Goals

This mission of the Nephrology SIG is to propel program development, quality improvement, and research initiatives to optimize patient functioning within this population. This SIG will create a platform for members to serve a role in the advancement of clinical practice and research targeting the specific needs of renal patients. We aim to do this via the following goals:

  1. Promote best practices for clinical care to address the specific needs of renal patients (who may also have urologic, rheumatologic, or other comorbidities). These patients benefit from working with a psychologist to address adherence, psychosocial functioning (peer/family/academic), peer concerns due to physical differences, coping with illness, coping with dialysis, pain management, and cognitive/executive functioning/learning deficits associated with chronic kidney disease, among other concerns.
  2. Promote quality research to facilitate and promote research within these populations. There is a lack of research on the psychosocial impact of pediatric kidney disease and associated conditions. This SIG highlights the need for continued research growth.
  3. Promote conversation around current assessment and clinical tools specific to these populations, to share and promote development with the larger membership.
