CPPP Update: A Year of Challenges and Changes

Since my last update in January 2020, we have experienced many challenges as a Society and a profession, which I hope spur positive changes well into the future. Already, I can see glimmers in the work emerging this year although much remains to be done. First, I want to give a shout out to the two inspiring and timely special issues published this year that I hope will positively impact how we all think about and care for our patients and their families.
In March, Guest Editors Elizabeth McQuaid and Robin Everhart pulled together a collection of papers on health disparities, in tandem with our sister journal JPP, calling for our field to move beyond traditional approaches to clinical care to better serve diverse and low-income children and families, improve children and adolescents’ behavioral health outcomes, and ultimately address disparities in pediatric behavioral health (read their open access introduction and APA spotlight).
Then, in September, Guest Editors Meghan McAuliffe Lines and Andrew Riley pulled together a collection of papers on integrated primary care, made more timely by their thoughtful introduction grounding this topic in the twin pandemics of our time: COVID-19 and systemic racial injustice (read their open access introduction). At an editorial level, we have been working with APA Publishing to adopt and implement equity, diversity, and inclusion standards across all facets of the journal. We also continue to see papers coming in on the barriers, benefits, and lessons learned in pivoting pediatric behavioral healthcare in response to COVID-19 as an exemplar of what can be done in low resource and/or pandemic situations to promote health and wellness for children and families. While we do not have a special issue planned on this topic, please continue to send your clinical trials, topical reviews, QI initiatives, ethics papers, etc. related to professional practice during COVID-19 to us – we appreciate hearing your lessons learned and having the opportunity to share strategies for success widely within our professional community. As always, we are stronger together.

Updates from the Journal of Pediatric Psychology

News
We have received a record number of submissions at JPP over the past 6 months. A huge thank you to Susan Wood (editorial assistant), our team of dedicated associate editors (Melissa Alderfer, Dean Beebe, Marisa Hilliard, Dave Janicke, Chad Jensen, and Avani Modi), and our wonderful peer review community for all their hard work - we look forward to finishing off the year strong!
We have a call for applications for two positions on the editorial team. Our current Assistant Editors for Transparent Reporting (Ana Gutierrez-Colina and Caitlin Murray) are finishing their terms. Ana and Caitlin helped the journal expand transparent reporting reviews to cover systematic reviews as well as all clinical intervention studies. We wish them well as they transition into new professional and personal roles.
29 new students were accepted into the JPP Student Journal Club for this academic year. Students have opportunities to contribute commentaries about feature articles in JPP. Starting this fall we will kick off a monthly virtual journal club meeting to discuss the feature article and the accompanying student commentary.
Latest Issues
Check out the September issue which is a Special Issue: Addressing Health Disparities in Pediatric Psychology guest edited by Cecelia Valrie, Idia Thurston, and Melissa Santos. This issue is part of a coordinated special issue with Clinical Practice in Pediatric Psychology which highlighted clinical approaches to address health disparities. You will want to put both issues on your reading list!
COVID-19 Special Series
JPP has an open call for papers relevant to the global COVID-19 pandemic for a rolling special topic series. We have already reviewed about 45 papers submitted for the special series and are fast-tracking publication of those that are accepted. We anticipate continuing this special series at least through the end of 2020. Check the website for the most up-to-date information.
Special Issues
A special issue on Pediatric Research in Young Children is in progress with Guest editors: C. Meghan McMurtry, PhD, Randi Streisand, PhD, and Carrie Tully, PhD. We look forward to seeing this issue published in 2021.
